Longtime Midlander Lou Ashmore passed peacefully at home December 20, 2013 after a lengthy illness. She was a warm and generous woman and a wonderful mother. Born December 19, 1925, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, she was the eldest daughter of W. H. and Irene Vanlandingham. The family moved to West Texas in the early 1930's. Lou graduated from Texas Tech in 1947 at the age of 20 and moved to Midland to pursue a career. She was soon employed as an exploration geologist for Magnolia Petroleum. She married fellow geologist L.Wayne Ashmore in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1964. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Midland and enjoyed Community Bible Study. In addition to raising two daughters, she taught 8th grade earth science and later returned to work as a geologist. At a time when many women would have retired; Lou became an entrepreneur and opened the first franchised Pack N' Mail in Texas. Her community mattered to her. Lou was deeply compassionate and quietly gave to a number of local charities. She served on the Board of the Salvation Army. Animals held a special place in her heart. Her home was never without a pet. Even the neighborhood squirrels and birds never missed a meal. She loved travel, the arts and music. She enjoyed painting and studied with Warren Taylor at Midland College. Her volunteer activities included Rake and Spade Garden Club, Zeta Tau Alpha, the Midland Symphony Guild, and the Petroleum Museum. With her friend Billie Karcher, she helped start Junior Cotillion in Midland. Lou is survived by two daughters: Diana (Dan) Florence of Dallas, and Alice (Mike Wolther) Ashmore of Loveland, Colo. Private family graveside services were held December 24th.
