LENA - James Gordon Bennett, an Eleroy resident for the past 53 years, died about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in a Freeport hospital after a heart attack.
He was born June 20, 1883, in Harlem Township, the son of Charles and Matilda Bennett. He married Mabel Miller June 9, 1907, in Eleroy. Bennett was employed as traffic manager at the Stover Manufacturing Co., Freeport, for 20 years. He then worked as a telegrapher for the Illinois Central Railroad for 30 years.
He was a 50-year member of Excelsior Lodge and a member of the following Masonic organizations: Tebala Temple of Rockford, Royal Select Masters of Illinois, Grand Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar of Illinois, and Freeport Consistory. Bennett was also a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers and Lena chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are his wife; one sister, Mrs. Harold Zimmerman of Cedarville; three brothers, Holland of Freeport, and Lynn and Weldon of Scioto Mills.
Service and Masonic rites will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Leamon Funeral Home, the Rev. Webster R. Hobb, pastor of Lena Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Eleroy Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
