Maude had a twin, her brother Claude Clay Welch. The family was living in the Walnut Hill Community when they were born, and the people in that area were very interested in the twins. Claude was fair, while Maude had darker coloring. Maude remembered that she and Claude were dressed as much alike as possible. She especially remembered one outfit which had a blue serge jacket. Maude had a little skirt with knife pleats to go with the jacket and Claude had blue serge short pants with his jacket. After Maude got old enough to notice, she realized that people crowded around them to look at them, and later said,
"People came for miles to see Dr. Welch's twins."

Maud later left Arkansas to go to Mt. Scott, OK, where she was a missionary to the Indians. She met her husband, Robert Templeton, there. She is rembered by her family as a lot of fun to be around, and very lively.
