George W. Smithson was born in Cornell County, Virginia, on New Year's day 1794 and died the 11th day of July, 1891, aged 97 years, 6 mo, and 10 days. He removed to Clinton county, Ohio, at the age of 19, and in 1825 he removed to this (Randolph) county, where he resided until his death. He was married in 1816 to Elizabeth daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Thornburg. This union was blessed with five children, one son and four daughters. His wife and two daughters preceded him to the spirit land. Perhaps no man was better known and respected in this county, being the oldest man in the county and he was a man of sterling worth. In 1835 he united with the church then known as the Christian Friends, now known as the Christian or Newlight church, and has been held a consistent member ever since. He leaves a host of relatives, his descendants being 5 children, 27 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren, besides a host of friends to mourn his death. After funeral services conducted by Rev. S.S. Hinshaw, he was laid to rest in New Dayton cemetery to await the smiles of the resurrection."
