Born at home in Norfolk,Va (300 W.Freemason Street); grew up in Virginia Beach. Served in the Merchant Marines, then four years in the USNavy. When WWII started for the U.S. in 1941 he left college, joined the USArmy Air Force and flew B-17 bombers with the 96th Bomb Squadron in Italy in 1944. Retired from the USAF/R as a Major about 1964.
Worked as a Real Estate appraiser in Virginia Beach and served on the Va Beach Rescue Squad for over 25 years, twice Captain
