Obituary from The Altus Weekly News, Thursday, August 12, 1897:
DEATH OF MISS GUSSIE WELCH.
A shadow of inexpressible sadness was cast over our little town Saturday noon when it was announced that the spirit of Miss Gussie Welch had taken its flight to that bourne from whence no traveler returns. Her illness had been of short duration and her condition was not considered dangerous until Friday afternoon.
Miss Gussie was just blossoming into womanhood, a sweet, lovable girl, whom to know was to love. Only last June she graduated with high honors from Hiram & Lydia College and was fully equipped to enter upon life's work, but the Master willed otherwise and called her home. She was a devoted christian, a dutiful and obedient daughter, and a loving, affectionate sister.
Her remains were interred at Nichols' Chapel Cemetery on Sunday, Rev's I. L. Burrow and J. C. Weaver conducting the services.
To her bereaved parents, brother and sisters we extend our deepest sympathies, know full well that mere words cannot assuage their sorrow. May the God whom Gussie loved and served and with whom she now is, soften this sad blow and comfort their sad hearts with His great love and mercy.

Gussie they say that you have gone
To dwell with God on high,
Who will furnish you with beautiful wings
And teach you how to fly.

They say you have crossed the river
The beautiful Jordan of death.
And you are talking with the angels
With your sweet impassive breath.

Each friend you left here on earth
Are thinking of you today,
And sadly wondering how it can be
That you have gone to stay.

Oh! What made you leave so soon?
Each says with a heart that stings
For you were an Angel here on earth
All but the snow-white wings.

Tribute of Respect
Altus Lodge No. 69 of the Independent Order of Good Templars has adopted the following resolutions in memory of Miss Gussie Welch, deceased.
Whereas, it has been the will of the Supreme Ruler of the universe to call from the earth our beloved sister, Mary Augusta Welch, therefore be it
Resolved, That while we deplore and regret the loss of our beloved sister, we submit to the will of our Heavenly Father, who gives us life and takes it, according to His
divine will and pleasure, be it
Resolved, That in the death of Mary Augusta Welch this order has lost a true and faithful sister, one who has been a faithful member with credit to herself and honor to the Order.
Resolved, that we tender to the bereaved relatives and friends.....a full measure of heartfelt sympathy in this dark hour of sorrow and affliction, and commend them to the Heavenly Father, who will surely give them solace and support.
Resolved, that these resolutions be placed upon the records of this Order, and that a copy be published in the Altus News; also that a copy of the same be sent to the relatives of our deceased sister.
