John was the son of Samuel Major and Elizabeth Jones. He married first Elizabeth Porter who died just two years later. With Elizabeth, John had one son, Thomas Porter. After Elizabeth's death, John married Euphrates Sleet in Culpeper County, Virginia on July 2, 1787. They were the parents of ten children, John Sleet, William Weden, Rosanah "Rose", Elizabeth, Nancy "Ann", Lucy, Samuel Collier, Sarah Carter, Benjamin F., and James Madison.

John served as an artilleryman in the Revolutionary War.
