William Leonard Ward was born in Ohio on June 4, 1843 to Emely (Starner) and Jacob Ward. He sometimes went by his middle name Leonard, or "Doc", or just his initials W.L.

He was married twice, and had 12 children.

He served in the Civil War as part of General Sherman's troops. Per his great-grandson, he was very tall (roughly 6'7") and was shot in the leg during the war. Also, he may have been captured and spent time in Andersonville, Georgia.

His Death Certificate (prepared by his brother A.C. Ward) lists his profession as a Farmer, but the US Census also lists him as a Doctor, a Postmaster, and a Laundry Manager.
