Arthur was the second son of six children and enjoyed a boisterous boyhood with his three brothers and two sisters.
He was a Mount Vernon High School graduate in 1946 where he was a football player and then attended Otterbein College in Westerville where his family had moved for a year before volunteering for the Korean War in 1948 the same week as his brothers David and James unbeknownst to each other.

Their older brother had already volunteered for World War II and his father and his two uncles had volunteered for World War I. A great grandfather and three great uncles had volunteered and died in the Civil War.

Arthur was married Sep 10, 1949 to Rose Altha Sleeper. See his maternal grandmother's memorial (Anna Harris Hampshie) to see part of the wedding party.

Arthur was a radar technician third class as were his brothers where they were stationed at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia. They were living at Buck's Trailer Park with Art's and Jim's wives.

Arthur tragically died off the coast of Ocean Beach in Chesapeake Bay, off Ocean View, Princess Anne, Virginia (near Norfolk) when he rescued his wife after the yellow war surplus raft they had taken out into the ocean capsized. Art got Rose back to the raft. The lifeguards had seen her bobbing white swim cap but when they reached them Arthur had become exhausted helping keep Rosie up as she kept pulling him down as he got her back to the raft. He died exactly two years after he had enlisted in the Navy with his two brothers David and Jim who came onto the scene too late to save him. They were about a mile out in rough seas. The two boys were picking up picnic items and arrived later. Arthur was in the peak of health and was a swimming instructor in the Navy. He was always a fine athlete. He was only 21 . May we never forget Arthur Charles Sapp. A very courageous man who gave up his life for his beautiful wife. "No greater Love has any man than he lay down his life for a friend". We will never forget his sacrifice.
His nickname had always been Scrapiron because he was so tough and his three year old niece called him Uncle Scrappy. He was sorely, sorely missed.

A Remembrance by Art's Sister Grace Sapp Leedy
Have people forgotten so soon
Forgotten his bright golden hair
Forgotten his strutting gait
Forgotten how he entered the garden gate
Can death make us FORGET?

Some may not recall his laughter
Recall the gladness in his bright blue eyes
The hurt when a hasty word was stinging
Can death make us FORGET?

For some he was the kid next door
To others a star football player
Loved and respected by his friends
He was "Artie," "Charlie," and "Uncle Art"
A dozen names but always
"ARTHUR MY LITTLE BROTHER"
Can death make us forget—-NEVER!!
