His parents were Patrick Hodgers and his first wife. James was living with his father and step mother Elizabeth Reid Wallace Hodgers (findagrave #36773792) of 11 Vernon St, Liverpool, when he joined the service in WWI. His effects were returned there after his death.

James was born in Castlebellingham, Co. Louth, Ireland about 1887. He served briefly in the British Navy and British Army and had a pretty spotty record in both.
