Plentywood Farmer Dies At Williston Hospital; Came Here in 1900
The funeral for John William Ator, 69, early resident of Plentwood, was held Monday afternoon at the Congregational church, the Rev. Walter L. Spencer officiating, Pallbearers were Seth Folsom, Herbert Jaques, William Anderson, Frank Nichols, Sam Fough and Harrison Malcom. Burial was in the Plentywood cemetery.
Mr. Ator died the morning of Jan. 22 at Williston hospital after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 28, 1878 in Eldorado Springs, Mo. He made a trip across the plains by team with his mother and father to Butte when he was 2 years old, then when 5 years old he returned to Missouri by railroad. He again traveled to Montana by team in 1888, settling in the Judith basin country near Stanford. He came to what is now Plentywood in the spring of 1900, locating on the present ranch five miles south of Plentywood.
In 1903 he married Agnes Holland and five children were born to them. His wife died in 1933 and a daughter, Ann, Mrs. Gail Anderson, died in 1941.
In 1937 he married Annie Connolly of Plentywood.
Mr. Ator served as deputy sheriff under Jack Dugan, as deputy assessor under H. B. Hill, and as county health officer.
Surviving are the widow and the following children: Albert, Coeur d'Alene, Ida.; Alice, Mrs. Henry Schroeder, Spokane; Howard, Antelope; Dorothy, Minneapolis; and Benny Holland, Spokane, a stepson of the first marriage. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters; Thomas, Colville, Wash.; Fred California; Mrs. Ruth Stewart, Jackson, Calif.; Mrs. Lena Campbell, of Hardin; and George, of Otter.
All of the children and the brother, George, were here for the funeral.
