Born July 7, 1917, in Monaca, he was the son of the late Hugh C. Sr. and Amelia Koehler Johnston.

Mr. Johnston was a retired employee of the seamless tube department of LTV Steel in Aliquippa,
with 32 years of service. After his retirement from LTV, he was employed by Kaufmann's Department Store in Rochester for 13 years, as the manager of sporting goods and toys and then appliances.
In 1977 he became the secretary/treasurer of Valley Burial Vault in Fallston until his retirement.

Howard is a member of the Monaca United Methodist Church, Rochester Masonic Lodge #229, New Castle Consistory, Syria Shrine, Monaca American Legion, a life member of the Rochester Elks and Monaca Turners, and was a retired volunteer fireman from the Monaca VFD #1-Station 56.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years,
Marguerite G. Gerald Johnston on July 7, 2011, a daughter Sally Alexander, a grandson Chip Johnston, and a brother Hugh C. Johnston Jr.

Surviving are 2 sons and daughters-in-law Thomas and Pat Johnston-Monaca, Charles D. and Marilynn Johnston-Wampum, a daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Louis Morris-Mt. Pleasant, SC, 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, a brother Charles E. Johnston-Center Twp, and a sister Alice Palmquist-Washington State.

Interment will follow in Beaver Cemetery-Beaver Pa.

Howard was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by all those who loved him.
