Fred J. Smith, aged 58, passed away at his house here at 11:30 this morning, death coming suddenly due to neuralgia of the heart. Mr. Smith had been in ill health for some time and spent last winter in California and Florida, where his condition was somewhat improved. He had been able to perform his duties in connection with the Newport Foundry, where he was employed, for the greater part of this winter, and seemed in his usual health until this morning, when he was taken ill. A physician was called but the end came suddenly.
The deceased was born in 1867 in Maribou, Wisconsin. He came to Arkansas in 1880, locating in Searcy. In 1888 he moved to Newport, being employed at that time with R. O. Drummond. He was a man of many sterling qualities, a kind husband and devoted father, a good citizen, who will be mourned by a wide circle of friends.
He is survived by his widow, and four daughters, Mrs. Henry Grant, and Misses Alva, Elizabeth and Winifred Smith; two brothers, Arthur Smith of Los Angeles, Calif., and Walter Smith of Newport; three sisters, Mrs. Maude Lewis, Searcy; Mrs. Emma Anderson, of Memphis, and Mrs. Walter Berry of Center Hill.
Funeral Arrangements will be announced tomorrow.
