James Hughes Ewan, the 6th of seven sons of John and Sylvia [née Hankins] Ewan, was born in December 1838 near Bantam in Tate Township, Clermont County, Ohio. His family had emigrated west from New Jersey just a year before. James was one of twelve children.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, James enlisted in Co. C, 12th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 3rd 1861. James served for the duration of the war seeing action at Antietam, Bull Run and captured at Cold Mountain; while running messages and mail between his commanders. He was later released in a prisoner exchange. James was discharged July 11th 1864 and returned home to Clermont County.

On October 18th 1865, James married Miss Elizabeth Ann Johnson, a daughter of Anderson and Maria [née Kellum] Johnson of Bantam, Ohio. This union had the following known children:
William Dighton (1867-1950)
Rebecca (1870-1879)
Albertine {m. O. Gregor}(1877-1920)
Sylvia Mariah {m. J. Gregor}(1881-1965)

James Hughes Ewan, a lifelong resident of Clermont County, departed this life on the 17th of August 1920 in the 81st year of his age. He was laid to rest near his parents and daughter Rebecca, at Old Bethel Methodist Churchyard Cemetery in Bantam, Ohio.

After James' death, Elizabeth Ewan applied for & received a "widows" pension for James' service during the Civil War.
