Edna May Diemert Hawkins, 93, of Bellingham, WA died Monday, March 16, 2009 of pneumonia at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born April 10, 1915 at home in Bellingham, WA to Arvid Leonard and Johanna Erickson.

Edna graduated from Bellingham High School in 1933. In 1946 she married Irwin Diemert of Lynnwood. They attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church for many years. She worked at the Cornwall Cleaners for 10 years and with Irwin co-owned Fountain Hardware for over 16 years. They enjoyed their cabin off the Mosquito Lake Road and traveling in their motor home until Irwin's death in 1985.

Edna married John O. Hawkins on November 26, 1988. Their love of traveling and music was a shared enjoyment, as Edna played piano and John sang along. They loved playing bocce ball at the Bellingham Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Irwin Diemert, John Hawkins; and sisters: Alice Johnson & Marie Kegley; and brothers: Howard Erickson & Earl Erickson.

Edna is survived by her son Arvid Diemert and his wife Kory of Bothell; step-son David (Maureen) Hawkins of Seattle; step-daughter Susan (Bill) Gardner of Birch Bay; four step-grandchildren, Krista Gardner Hammer and husband Eric of Bellevue, Shea H. Gardner and husband Erik Yip of Oakland, CA, Nora K. Hawkins of Washington, DC and Quinn P. Hawkins of Kirkland, WA; two step-great-grandchildren, Davis and Carson Hammer; sister-in-law Wilma Erickson of Bellingham and many nieces and nephews.

Edna was a member of the Light & Life Christian Fellowship Church and the Sunshine Workers homemakers club. She was a church pianist for forty years, enjoyed gardening and became a Master Gardner shortly before she retired.

Arrangements are under the care of Valley Funeral & Cremation Service, Guide Meridian and King Tut Roads.
