Henry Clark Winston Jr., 91, formerly of Hurt, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Autumn Care of Altavista. He was the husband of the late Willie Holland Winston for 57 years.
Born Nov. 29, 1912, in Campbell County, he was a son the late Henry Clark Winston Sr. and Sallie Stuart Withers Winston. He was a member of Hurt United Methodist Church, where he had served as superintendent of Sunday School, chairman of the building committee, and teacher of the Men's Bible Class; a former member and past president of the Hurt Ruritan Club; a member of the board of directors of the local chapters of the United Way and the American Red Cross; a past vice president of the Hurt Community Center and the first mayor of Hurt, and a retired employee with over 42 years of service with Burlington Industries Inc. Henry was an avid golfer, fisherman, and hunter.
He is survived by two daughters, Clem Shelton and her husband, Joel, of Gretna, and Jerry Inge of Fairfax; one sister, Martha Evers Wallenhorst of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Mike Shelton of Augusta, Ga., Mark Shelton of Durham, N.C., Joni Pritchard of Mechanicsville, Vickie Fang of Lamham, Md., and Terry Inge of Seattle, Wash.; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alexander "Rip" Winston, Charles Winston and George Winston; and seven sisters, Alice W. White, Julia W. Clay, Jennet W. Beach, Elizabeth W. Payne, Sadie W. Lindsay, Virginia W. Gibson, and Flora W. Dunnavant.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at Hurt United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Jack Schooler. Interment will follow at Altavista Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, at Finch & Finch Inc. Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista, and other times at the home of a daughter, Clem Shelton, 105 Music St. South, Gretna.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those wishing to make memorials consider the Hurt United Methodist Church, Riverview Road, Hurt VA 24563.
