He was the oldest of 6 sons. He attended school in Tennessee, farmed and drove a semi-truck.

On 22 December 1945 in Middlesboro, Kentucky he married Ruby M. Greer, who predeceased him in 2001.

In 1951 he moved to Michigan where he worked at Eaton Manufacturing for 9 years. He also performed heavy equipment repair for Universal Crane Company. For many years he owned and operated "John’s Garage", retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the Wolfenbarger Baptist Church in Tennessee and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #324 and the N.R.A. For many years, he grew a large garden and kept family and friends in produce. He had volunteered at the Tri-County Labor Food Bank for 8 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and water skiing. He also loved riding his Harley Davidson.

After a short illness at age 88, he passed away at Bronson Battle Creek. Funeral services were held at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Kintigh officiating.
