Mrs. Kusel was born Sylvia May Cates on June 14, 1912, in Princeton, Mo. She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of the area. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Smith Center.
Survivors include her husband, Leo Kusel of the home; a son, Larry Cates of Belleville; two brothers, Dale Cates of Smith Center and Millard Cates of Weatherford, Texas; two sisters, Juanita “Johnny” Palmer of Smith Center and Laura Elizabeth Hamilton of Cawker City; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Simmons Chapel, Smith Center, the Rev. David DeShazo officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.
