James was a tinsmith in New Bedford, MA. He came to Milford around 1853, with his future son -in -law, Solomon Matthews. They started a tinsmith shop selling Stoves, Tin Ware, etc. Brown and Matthews started the first cannery in Milford in 1857. It closed in 1860.
In 1859, Solomon ran off with James' daughter, Isabella Brown they married on January 27th of that year in New York City.
Solomon and Isabella returned to Milford by 1860. All sins forgiven apparently, since the Matthews and Brown Families are living under the same roof by the Census of 1860.
James continued as a merchant and tinsmith in partnership with his son, James Oscar Brown.
He died 1879.
Husband of Emeline Spooner Brown whom he married on
January 1, 1838 in New Bedford. They lived in Fairhaven, MA until they came to Milford.
