Due to his grief, he left this new baby with his wife's parents, Samuel and Mahala Taylor and joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. Participating with the 35th Reg. Co, G, Ky Infantry.
Upon his discharge, he met and married Amanda Boone LaRue, about 1867, at a church picnic.
He was a farmer and father of six children:
Berry, Lydia, William Hodgen, David Rush, Wesley Allen, and Mary Elizabeth.
He and Amanda raised grandchildren, Rosa Ann, Grace, and David Allen Bratcher.
