Son of Elias and Otelia (Augspurger) Compton. Graduated College of Wooster, Wooster, OH, and obtained a PhD at Princeton. He taught Economics at Dartmouth for one year before going to work for the Federal Trade Commission. He then became the first Secretary-Manager for the newly formed American Forest and Paper Association until 1944. On August 21, 1944 he became the 5th President of Washington State University, a position he held until 1951.

He married Helen Harrington on December 29, 1916, and was the father of four children.
