Carlton Glen Carse of Sistersville, WV was a man of fortitude, faithfulness, determination; he was a small village man with a huge grateful heart and kind spirit. The twinkle in his blue eyes matched the spirit of gratitude for each day of life and will be missed as he passed from this life on January 23, 2014 after recently celebrating his 87th birthday. He looked forward to his reunion with Dianne (November 2012), Christopher (August 2009) and David (March 1964), even as he embraced each new day.
Carlton was born at home in the "village" of Wick on November 13, 1926, the oldest of two children to William "Creel" (1978) and Lillian Morgan Carse (1973). His beloved brother, Donald, of San Diego, CA preceded him in death in 2004 after a battle with lung cancer.
Carlton's formative years, learning from his parents and grandparents and the "village" around him, were the wellspring of the stories he loved to share. These roots were very dear to him and we all were enriched by the stories he would spin about his heritage. Additionally, upon graduating from Tyler County High School, Carlton joined the Army. At Fort Lee, VA, he served as a Military Police until his honorable discharge in 1946. Carlton took pride in having served his country and was able to benefit from the GI bill which enabled him to receive training to fly sea planes and for a vocation. He loved to climb as a child; when he became a lineman with the Monongahela Power Company in 1946, he was right at home. Still with child-like wonder, he would recall the moment of seeing the first light bulb come on in his parents' home. He experienced this same delight in being a part of helping bring electricity to rural West Virginians. Carlton worked for Monongahela Power Company for 46 years. Carlton dearly loved his work, his colleagues, the customers he served and God's Creation and the wonder of nature. He gifted his children with both a work ethic and love of nature.
Carlton's source of joy was his family and, especially, his wife, Dianne, of 62 years. He was a devoted father to Chris, Craig and Susan. The memories of family camping, fishing, hunting, mountain, beach and farm trips were fresh and fulfilling to the end. He was a nurturing caregiver to his son, Chris, through a long illness, and to Dianne during her 9 month stay at the Sistersville Center. Carlton's source of hope was God to whom he was faithful and grateful. Carlton was a member of Sistersville First United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Men, and in earlier years served as lay leader, a Sunday school teacher and youth group leader. Carlton was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge. He had served on the Sistersville City Council and was a President of the Sistersville High School athletic boosters club.
Carlton genuinely loved his neighbors on Oxford Street, his faithful helpmates, David and Jackie Weekley, his feline friends who were ‘people too' to him, and his friends at Church. He spent his last three months in his children's homes, Susan (Wayne) in Bishop, Georgia, and Craig (Leslie) in Abilene, Texas where he suddenly passed.
