Lawrence "Larry" Pohl, 79, of Amarillo died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen Friedrich officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma in San Diego.

Larry was born April 22, 1934, in San Diego to Leonard and Dora Pohl. He graduated from Hoover High School in 1952. He met his wife, Sherrill, in San Diego, and they were married in Hawaii, where he served in the Air Force for the next three years during which time daughter Pam was born.

The family returned to California, where Larry attended Northrop Institute of Technology in Los Angeles and received a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering degree. He was then employed by General Dynamics in San Diego for three years on the Atlas Centaur Program, followed by 26 years as an industrial sales engineer for Texaco Inc. in San Diego, Phoenix and Amarillo. After the Amarillo refinery closed, he continued with Texaco in Amarillo as the area sales and lubrication engineer until retiring in 1991.

Larry and Sherrill spent their retirement years RVing throughout the U.S. and Canada. Family was first, then friends, enjoying golfing, motorcycling and watching West Texas State University basketball. The highlights included early Saturday morning water skiing on the bay in San Diego with his kids, river rafting on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with their son and son-in-law, and attending the Sturgis motorcycle rally with family and friends.

He was always there to help when needed, Meals-on-Wheels, building ramps for the disabled, in charge of the food pantry and working with the property committee as needed at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. He was very proud of his volunteer time with HOST with Amarillo Independent School District at Eastridge Elementary School.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemarie Bishop.

Survivors include his wife, Sherrill Pohl; three daughters, Pam Zulfer and husband Phil of Seattle and Kris Pohl and Debbie Ortega of Las Vegas; a son, Jeff Pohl of Cape Cod, Mass.; a granddaughter, Jamie Taylor; a great-granddaughter, Zoe Taylor; a grandson, Erik Zulfer, all of Seattle; a sister, Paula Annis and husband Les of Fountain, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 3500 S. Bowie St., Amarillo, TX 79109; or to Hospice Care of the Southwest, 6600 Killgore Drive, Suite 110, Amarillo, TX 79106.
