"Long-time Alaska pioneer Malgia "Mal" Arehart Jr., 78, died March 31, 2011, in Juneau. A celebration of life was held in Anchorage May 6 at Central Lutheran Church, 15th Avenue and Cordova Street. Pastor Mark Allred officiated.
Mal was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Spokane, Wash., to Malgia J. Arehart Sr., and Margaret Euginia Rinehart-Arehart. In 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in Yakima, Wash., married Patricia "Pat" A. Greg of Sunnyside, Wash., and was transferred from Fort Lewis, Wash., to Alaska. The Army placed him in Anchorage and Fairbanks for technical training with the Alaska Communication School in the area of radio communications, and upon completion of training, he was stationed in Valdez. 1960, he moved his family to Juneau where he joined the federal service system. He worked as an electrical technician for the NOAA; and then retired from the Alaska Power Administration after supporting the Eklutna and Snettisham power projects. He loved HAM radio and talking with other HAMs all over the world. He enjoyed repairing electronic equipment from aircraft to televisions, and had a special place in his heart for all his grandchildren. Mal was a defender of the Constitution, our country, and the principles and traditions our forefathers and ancestors fought for under the U.S. flag. He was a longtime member in Anchorage of Moose Lodge #1534 and AmVets Post 2, Gen. Thomas P. Carroll.
Mal is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Barbara Gohl-Kaleopa'a; sons, David Arehart, Scot Arehart, and Bradley Arehart; grandchildren, Kelly Gohl and Joseph, Alicia, Christopher and Cristina Arehart; sister, Delores Minter and brother-in-law, Virgil Minter; brothers, Ronald Arehart and Eugene Arehart; nieces, Susan Richter, Kathy Venable, Athena Ellis, Tracy Choun and Tammy Johnson; nephews, Tom Minter and Brian Minter; and the many children of his nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have donations made to AmVets Post 2, 855 E 38th Ave., Anchorage, AK 99503, under the name of Malgia Arehart Jr.
