Bailey enlisted in the military 23 November 1940 in Huntington, West Virginia. He married Gladys Pittman Shrewsbury 27 August 1948 in Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia. Gladys died 28 October 1960 in the Fort Knox Post hospital, so Bailey possibly made the military his career. He remarried after the loss of his wife, and in 1966 he lost his 6 year old daughter
