During the Civil War he served in Company K, 3rd Iowa Infantry Volunteers. He was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Shiloh 6 Apr 1862 and paroled 12 Oct 1862 at Aikens Landing, Virginia. He later joined the 9th Iowa Cavalry and was mustered out with the rank of Major.
