Head of MCCSC extended services dies
H-T Report November 15, 1994

Ronald M. "Ron" Chester, director of extended services for the Monroe County Community School Corp. since 1978, died Sunday at Bloomington Hospital. He was 59.

Chester was in charge of MCCSC buildings, maintenance and transportation.

"It's a tragic loss for us, it truly is," acting superintendent Jim Harvey said Monday. "The contributions he made in terms of understanding people were almost beyond description."

Born Feb. 27, 1935, in Gary, he was the son of Raymond and Thelma (Fitzgerald) Chester. He was a graduate of Indiana State University where he received bachelor's and master's degrees.

Chester spent the 1960s in industry, working as an instrument repairman for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. He supervised high school vocational programs in Franklin and Connersville before coming to the MCCSC in 1973 as coordinator of the Hoosier Hills Area Vocational School.

Harvey said school employees often relied on Chester's sense of humor.

"I'm sure, once a little bit of the pain passes, there are going to be lots of Ron Chester stories," Harvey said. "And the common ingredient in them is his sense of humor and his real caring and affection for the people he worked with."

Chester's memberships include the Elks Lodge 446.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Reaper) Chester; one daughter, Kandee Chester of Bloomington; three sons, Raymond Chester of Connersville, Jon Chester of Corning, N.Y., and Mark Chester of West Bend, Wis.; his mother of Valparaiso; one half sister, Audrey Hendershot of Portage; one half brother, Charles Chester of Santa Ana, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Small officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens.

Friends may call 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
