Margaret V. McGroty was born in South Berwick, Maine on July 1, 1867. Her parents were Hugh and Catherine Kearnes McGroty. Her father, Hugh, served valiantly during the Civil War in the 3rd Infantry New Hampshire. He was taken prisoner during the Battle of Drewry's Bluff and imprisoned in Andersonville, Georgia. Because of his injuries and ill health, Margaret's father passed away in 1868 when she was but a year old.

Margaret and her mother Catherine went to live with Catherine's mother, Eunice Ward Kearnes, in the Bunker Hill Boston area after the death of Hugh. Margaret became very active in her parish church of St. Francis de Sales. She traveled to Naples, Italy and Algiers on a pilgrimage in 1925.

Margaret lived at the same address from first coming to Boston until her death in 1940. She was 73 years old at the time of her passing.
