William was the son of William and Rachel Bickel Linger. On November 22, 1893 he married Mary Anna Frances Thompson and they were the parents of Hattie, Nettie Frances, Troy Columbus, Homer Jefferson and Mattie Gay. William served during the Civil War on the side of dthe Confederacy. He was in Company I, 31st Infantry Regiment Virginia. He enlisted as a private on June 17, 1861. Obituary added courtesy of Glenda Eisenhour. The Weston Democrat, Fri. 28 March 1913: LINGER, W. J., aged 76 years died at his home near Dell, on Stone Coal Thursday of last week. Survived by wife, two sons and three daughters. Two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Forinash of Vandalia and Mrs. Susan Herron, of Horner, two brothers, A. C. Linger of Horner, and H. K. Linger of Idaho, also survive.
