Abraham Cooper was born about 1834 in Monroe County, Indiana to Wilson and Barbara Cooper. He enlisted at the age of 27 into Company B, Indiana 47th Infantry Regiment on 15 November 1861 for the War Between the States. He mustered out on 23 October 1865 at Shreveport, Louisiana.

He made his way back home to Indiana.

Abraham claimed a U. S. Civil War Pension on March 28, 1889 due to invalid status (certificate number 394535). The circumstances of the status is unknown at present.

He died on February 4 1898 in Peru, Miami County, Indiana. One wonders if he was infirm from his war service. In 1900 an application for a Veteran Headstone was processed for the Oak Grove Cemetery in Peru, Miami County, Indiana.

The Oak Grove Cemetery was to the north and west of Mount Hope, and it later merged with Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru, Miami County, Indiana.

Abraham Cooper was married twice. First Elizabeth Crum and then to Nancy Stanton. Abraham Cooper married Eliza Crum (Cooper) on September 12, 1844, when he was 19 years old.Eliza was still alive when he married Nancy. Abraham Cooper married Nancy Emma Stanton (Cooper) in Miami, Indiana, on July 24, 1873, when he was 48 years old. It is unclear if he divorced Eliza or just left her. Eliza reappears with him on the 1880 census but she was not with him when he died or even listed living with him in the 1892 Peru directory. Nancy is listed on the 1880 census living with her young daughter with Abraham, Mary May Cooper. Nancy and Mary May Cooper are living with Nancy's brother in Fulton County, Indiana. She is listed as "widowed." Abraham was living at his daughter and son-in law's house at the time of his death. Eliza's death date and location of burial is still in question until further research reveals this information.
