Max Robert Millis
Birth: 30 DEC 1926 in OR, Columbia Co, Vernonia
Death: 13 MAY 2007 in OR, Multnomah Co, Portland

The Oregonian:
Max Millis died of natural causes on Sunday, May 13, 2007. Max will always be remembered as a man who took great joy in family and friends. All who know him will remember his humor, affection and the warmth he shared with those around him. Max was also known for his loyalty, integrity and independent thinking. Throughout his life, Max had a love of fine wine and was an avid connoisseur. Known for his sweet tooth, he was an avid connoisseur of rhubarb pie and pastries as well. He was a champion squash player who also enjoyed fishing, duck hunting and golf. But above all else, Max loved time with his family. The greatest moments of his life were times he shared with his siblings, his children and grandchildren.

Max was born in Vernonia to Philip and Blanche Millis on Dec. 30, 1926. Growing up with six siblings during the Great Depression, he learned to take comfort and find strength in his faith and his family, always looking forward with optimism.

He attended Vernonia High School, where he stood out as a dynamic athlete. He enjoyed boxing, basketball, track, and helped take the football team to many victories. Graduating early to join the Navy in 1945, Max joined the war effort and hoped to become a pilot over the Pacific. Following basic training in San Diego, Max became an officer candidate and the Navy sent him to Willamette University, then on to the University of Colorado and Oregon State University, where he studied business engineering. With the war over, he did not re-enlist.

After some time working on the fishing boats and docks in both San Pedro and the San Juan Islands, he continued his studies at the University of Washington, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.

Max turned his interests into a lifelong career as a stock broker, joining Blythe & Company in 1956. Gifted with an inventor's mind and engineer's training, he always specialized in the study of innovative and technology-oriented companies. His great talent for research led to unique success as a stock broker. Staying with the company through mergers and acquisitions, he was the most senior broker at USB PaineWebber when he retired in 2003.

Max married Anne Kirkwood Krohn in 1973, making him an instant parent to her two children, Susan and Philip Krohn. In 1974 their son, Robert, was born. Anne Millis passed away in 1963.

In 1985, Max met Suzanne Storms; in 1991, they were wed and he became the stepfather of Erin, Duncan and Meredith McRoberts.

A compassionate and generous man, Max worked closely with the Oregon Community Foundation to support many charities. He served on the boards of Planned Parenthood and Oregon Episcopal School, and served on the vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the Arlington Club, Multnomah Athletic Club, The University Club, and Alpha Tao Omega fraternity.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Suzanne Millis; his children, Robert, Susan, Philip, Erin, Duncan and Meredith; their spouses, Sherry, Rick, Chris and John; and seven grandchildren, Alexis, Sarah, Deneke, Dirk, Peter, Mack and Kate.

His humor, compassion, and integrity were immeasurable and touched all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
