Irene Vivian Bowhay, 98, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society Idaho Falls Village in Idaho Falls.

She was born July 23, 1915, in Spencer, Idaho, to William Glen and Anna E. Smith Haight. She attended elementary schools in Idaho and Oregon and high school in Heyburn, Idaho.

On Oct. 3, 1932, she married Cecil Marsena Cannon and they lived in Nevada, Idaho, Oregon and Utah. Born to them were five children: Jim, Bill, Vivian, Edith and Earl.

She later married Bill B. Bowhay on June 7, 1954. They lived in the Lost River Valley and later moved to the Little Lost River Valley. They then moved to Dubois and had one son, Jerry.

In addition to working as a waitress and cook, Irene worked on farms during spud harvest, and was a letter carrier for Spencer, Kilgore and the Sheep Station for 22 years. She worked hard all her life supporting her family.

She loved volunteering, crocheting and quilting for hospital benefits and helping with meals at funerals. She was a member of the Lost Rivers Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and Lily Rebekah Lodge. Her hobbies were quilting, crocheting and sewing. She could always be counted to assist her family, friends and the elderly.

Survivors include her sons, Jim (Sheila) Cannon of Yakama, Wash., Earl (Karla) Cannon of Ammon, and Jerry (Leisa) Bowhay of Darlington; sister, Dorothy Wortley of Pocatello; daughter-in-law, Thelma Cannon of Idaho Falls; 21 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 56 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Anna Haight; husbands, Cecil Cannon and Bill Bowhay; son, Bill Cannon; daughters, Vivian Cannon and Edith Hogan; brothers, Charles Haight and Lynn Haight; sisters, Ethel Lords and Josephine Holden; and one grandson, David Aaron Stewart.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Community Baptist Church in Dubois, with Pastor John Lovegrove officiating. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday before services at the church. Burial will follow in Dubois Cemetery.
