Henry Ward Adams was one of six children of Thomas Tunstall Adams and Matilda Ward. Matilda was a granddaughter of John Ward & Anne Chiles. Thomas was a grandson of Robert Adams Jr & Penelope Lynch.

Henry's three brothers never married or had children, so he was the only son to carry on the Adams surname when he married Annie Pauline Floyd on December 6, 1853 and subsequently raised seven children. As of 2014 There are over 500 known descendants of this couple (including spouses), many of whom gather for an annual reunion.

Henry and his wife lost their estate at the conclusion of the War Between the States. Henry fought for the confederacy, serving as a colonel in the 53rd Virginia Militia of Campbell County, VA from 1860 to 1862. Their son, Henry Ward Adams Jr., who was born during the Civil War and had great financial success in the lumber and later cattle business, would later buy back his parent's estate, as well as the ancestral estates of his great-grandparents John Ward and Robert Adams Jr.

Henry is buried next to his wife, Annie Pauline Floyd, at the Ward ancestral home on the Staunton River due east of the mouth of the Big Otto River.
