David Brian Card, 55, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, after a strong, courageous battle against metastatic colon cancer.
His smile, love, life lessons and strength will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
David was born June 30, 1958, in Waverly, Iowa, to Bill and Ardith Card. The family moved from Iowa to the Hayward, Calif., area in 1963, then onto Bonanza, Ore., in 1972. While in California, David was a three-sports star and to this day still has his $25 savings bond for being MVP of the LaVista baseball team in 1969.
When the family moved to Bonanza, he continued with his three sports all star abilities, quarterbacking the football team, guard on the basketball team, and pitcher/shortstop on the baseball team - winning many awards along the way. One great award outside of sports that David "won" at Bonanza was his wife, Patty. David and Patty wed in 1977 and enjoyed 36 years of fun, laughter and "adventures in the backyard."
After high school, David continued his winning ways, playing on men's slow pitch softball teams for over 20 years, first with the Klamath Lakers and then traveling and playing with Traughber Oilers out of Bend, Ore. The Oilers took seventh in the nation in 1986 and are in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. Fabulous memories and friends were made during these times - friendships that continued to this day.
Right out of high school, David began working for Weyerhaeuser on the OC&E railroad track, now known as the OC&E Trail, where many knew him by his nickname, Smiley. He then moved into Weyerhaeuser's Klamath mill. After the mill shut down, he worked at Grover Electric, Lucas and Howard, and for the past 17 years at Supply One/Diamond Home Improvement. His work ethic and customer service was always at the forefront.
Not being able to sit back and do nothing, David and Patty decided to help start up the Henley Cub Scout Pack. David became a Cub Scout leader as well as the scoutmaster for six years, even after the boys had both achieved their Webelow Arrows.
David also showed his passion for sports by coaching Little League and Babe Ruth, and coaching and being president of the Pop Warner Football League for nine years. David expanded and developed the local Pop Warner program and laid the foundation as it continues to be an integral part of the youth sports community today. David was very proud to have arranged for the first Klamath Falls Pop Warner football team that had an opportunity to play at Autzen Stadium. He took pride in seeing players move onto their high school careers and develop into young men.
After almost 10 years of marriage, David and Patty started their family. Their two sons, Bryn and Drew, brought the most amazing chapters to their lives. David loved to brag about his boys to everyone: the fact that they have his amazing work ethic, they are fabulous husbands and dads, and each graduated from college, a very important achievement to both David and Patty. Bryn attended Oregon State University and then graduated from the University of Utah and continues pursuing his master's degree in education for special education. Drew graduated from College of the Siskiyous with a degree in general studies and played baseball as well as finishing his college career as a volunteer assistant coach.
David had a vast passion for baseball; he loved to watch his boys play. One of the great times came when Bryn pitched the Henley Hornets to both of their back-to-back state championships in 2004 and 2005. If you were at the games, you probably saw David pacing back and forth, doing what he could to "help" Bryn throw his next pitch. Bryn was on the back-to-back Oregon State National Championship baseball teams before transferring to Utah in 2008, graduating and finishing his baseball career as a Ute.
Bryn met Kelsey Tannehill in 2006 while at Oregon State University and they were married in 2011. On Oct. 13, 2013, we all welcomed their first daughter, Delaney Maree Card. We will forever remember the look on David's face when he met his granddaughter. Bryn and his family now live in Sherwood, and he is the head baseball coach at Wilsonville High School, as well as working in the special education classroom.
Drew is an avid hunter, bow and gun, and actually shot an arrow through an arrow for household bragging rights - we have picture proof! Drew took great pride in beating his dad at bowling time after time after time, a cherished competition shared by David and Drew.
Drew married his high school sweetheart Emma Thompson in 2013 and we all welcomed our grandson Alex at the same time. Alex brought David many years of entertainment and love. Drew is working at Heaton Steel, and he and Emma are preparing to welcome a new baby into the house in August, news that brought that vivid smile to David's face.
David and Patty loved to travel together, whether it was to watch the boys play sports - baseball, football, basketball, roller hockey, and bowling - or just to visit. On one day in 2008, Bryn was pitching in Virginia and Drew was pitching in Portland, both starting and finishing their games at the same time and both throwing no-hit shutouts! David was so proud! Sports took David and Patty to many states and on many adventures over the 36 years - Oregon, Idaho, Utah, California, Washington, Canada, Nevada, Iowa, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and all of the states they drove through on their way! Disneyland vacations, cruises to Alaska and Mexico, and family vacations to Hawaii brought all great joy.
David's favorite pasttime was his family and time spent with his family and friends. He loved boating, riding quads, fly fishing, camping, playing and watching sports, hiking, mountain biking and working in his shop. His creativity and attention to detail brought many treasured gifts to family members. David's love of the Oakland Raiders, sometimes in his own words "bringing me undue pain and agony" still brought him enjoyment of cheering for them and wearing his hats and shirts proudly. David and Patty were season ticket holders for many years. This past year, they were able to share their passion of sports by sharing their tickets with others.
With everything that David accomplished in his life, the lessons he taught to his family and others were very important to him and seeing those lessons carried on was a source of great pride to him. His passion for tight-knit family and always being there for each other was something David instilled in those around him and something David and Patty showed by example. David always believed in standing and shaking hands with those he met, something he passed on to his boys.

David is survived by his wife of 36 years, Patty; his sons and their families, Bryn, Kelsey and Delaney Maree Card and Drew, Emma and Alex Card; mother-in-law Beverly Cheyne-Ritter; nephews and their families, Chris, Brooke, Ashlynn and Casey Long and Jim and Ann Long; honorary "family" members Ron, Trista, and Nolan Cookson, Mark and Louise Malinowski, Aaron and Christy Malinowski and their family, Adam and Jessica Malinowski and their family, and Gareth Dahlgren; his sisters, Joann Card of Bonanza, Oregon, Peggy Tietjen of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Pastor Rachelle (Card-Wells) Bobenmoyer of New Hampton, Iowa. A Brother Romaine Wells of Charles City. Iowa.

David was preceded in death by his parents William "Bill" & Ardith Card of Bonanza, Oregon, both in 1998.
