Isaac, the son of John Williams and Eleanor Hite, attended William and Mary College, and later settled in Fredericksburg, where he practiced law. He became a brilliant lawyer, with a legal knowledge and command of facts and authorities so unusual that he gained the sobriquet of "the Big Book."

He married Lucy Coleman Slaughter, daughter of Capt. Philip Slaughter and Margaret Strother, in 1824. Their daughter Peggy French Williams married John Mercer Patton, and was a great-grandmother of Gen. George S. Patton.
