Andrew was the son of Joseph Tipton and his wife, Mary "Polly" Mays.

Andrew and his brother, Spencer Tipton (1845-1863) were both in the Union Army in the War Between the States. They both lost their lives in the war.

Andrew was a Private, later promoted to Sergeant. Andrew and his brother, Spencer, were in Company B, 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry.

25 Sep 1864 - He was captured and taken P.O.W. by the Confederate Army at the Battle at Sulphur Creek Trestle, (also known as Battle of Athens).

27 Apr 1865 - about 2 a.m., about 9 miles north of Memphis, TN - The steamer "Sultana" with a large number of paroled prisoners on board, blew up, killing 174 instantly and many others died of their injuries. Andrew was one of the paroled prisoners that perished that day.

Andrew was married to Susannah Elizabeth Whittle (1833-1878). They had five children.
