John W. Andrews was 23, and living in Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a
Private in Co. D of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 19, 1861. He was mustered into
federal service on Nov 25, 1861. On Dec 12, 1863, he became a "Reenlisted
Veteran" along with most of his company.

"While in the service, Andrews was promoted to 7th Corporal on March 1, 1863; to
5th Corporal on Jan 24, 1864; to 4th Corporal on May 1, 1864; to 3rd Corporal
(Musician) on July 1, 1864; and finally to 5th Sergeant on Jan 1, 1865. He mustered
out of the service with his company on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta.

"He applied for his pension on Dec 21, 1889. His application is #744,911. His
wife later applied for her widow's pension on April 13, 1925. Her application is
#1,231,721."

Before he enlisted to fight in the Civil War, John married Miss Mary J. Barnes, of Iowa, in February of 1861. The couple had three children, on of whom died in infancy. They were Leonard F. and Milo M. In the fall of 1870, Mr. Andrews moved to York County, Nebraska where he took up a homestead in Section 30, Township 11, Range 2 of 160 acres of land one mile north of the town of York. In September of 1878, he married Mary J. Milligan with whom he had one son, Herman. added by Weston4
