HICKORY - Robert Lee (R.L.) Brown, 85, of Hickory, died Nov. 29, 2005, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Hart County, Ga., he was a son of the late Byrd C. and Edna Gunter Brown.

A member of Westview United Methodist Church, he retired from Gaines Motor Lines and was an avid fisherman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Crider Brown; a son, Robert Gregory Brown; a grandson, Robert Thomas Brown; a sister, Anna Lou Holt; and a brother, Cranfield Brown.

Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Spake of Hickory; a son and daughter-in-law, John R. and Joy Brown of Granite Falls; a grandson, B.J. Spake of Hickory; a granddaughter, Heather Brown Holiday of Denver, Colo.; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Barbara and Ben Dickson, Ruby Nell Barger, Ophelia Peak, Daisy and Ralph Victory and Virginia Macijewski, all of Hartwell, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Rachel Hicks of Hickory and Anne Brown of Hartwell, Ga.; and two brothers-in-law, George and Gerald Crider of Hickory.

The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Charlene Hutchings at 11 a.m. Friday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jamey Armstrong, Ronnie Crider, David White, Joe White, Paul Finger and Marcus Parlier.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.
