Named after the native laurel oak trees, which once inhabited the site, this 90 acre cemetery got it's start in the early 1800s with 4 acres known as the Old Cemetery or Colonial Park Cemetery.
A very important part of the history of Savannah, this one was for African Americans and Strangers (Potter's Field). The "strangers" might also include Jews and Native Americans.
You can drive through the cemetery and you can see tombstones dating back to the early 1800s.
Time has taken its tole. Take into consideration that some of the early markers might have been made of wood and that through the years are now gone. Also, some were made of concrete which has deteriorated through the years and now may be unreadable.
Though many stones are damaged, fences and barriers fallen apart, etc., records still give us many of the names. Everyone meant something to someone at one time. No one should be forgotten.
