During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a bombardier on a B-17 and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 13 months.
Before his retirement in 1989, he was the Director of Farm Advisors for the University of California Agricultural Extension Service in the Monterey County.
He was a member of Professional Soil Scientists of California, The Rotary Club of Salinas, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, (Mormon), where he served most recently as Patriarch of the Monterey California Stake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edmond and Verna Fanny Perry Ririe and son, John Thomas Ririe.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Joanne Ririe of Salinas; children, James I. Ririe of Tampa, Florida, Nancy Simkins of Salinas, Marianne Loertscher of Salt Lake City, Utah, David W. Ririe of Pocatello, Idaho; sisters, Elaine Jackson of Utah, Carma Fillmore of Idaho; 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held, Sunday, January 12, 2014 from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA 93901.
Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 13, 2014 at 11:00a.m. at The Church of Jesus of Latter-Day Saints, 255 E. Alvin Drive, Salinas, CA 93906
Burial to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 850 Abbott Street, Salinas, CA 93901.
