LEAVENWORTH, KS. . . Sister Mary Peter Brost, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, formerly a primary school teacher, died at 3:05 a.m., on Friday, May 9, 2003, Mother House, Leavenworth, KS.
Marie Elizabeth Brost was born on July 24, 1909 in Greenbush, MN one of eight children of Peter William and Mary Elizabeth Berres Brost. She graduated from Shamrock and Kaiver School and St. Vincent Academy, Helena, MT. Sister Mary Peter received a B.A. in English from Saint Mary College, Leavenworth, KS. She attended Carrol College, Helena, MT.
She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on September 7, 1927 and, as Sister Mary Peter, made her profession of vows on June 17, 1929.
After profession, Sister taught in schools in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Montana. In 1980-1982, Sister Mary Peter served in Pastoral Ministry in Minturn, CO after which she tutored small groups at St. Laurence O'Toole School, Laramie, WY. After retiring to the Mother House in August 1992, she tutored students at Xavier Elementary School, Leavenworth through the foster grandparent program.
In the Community survivors include two sisters, Sister Veronica Marie Brost, SCL, Mother House, Leavenworth, KS and Sister Mary Brost, SCL, Olathe, KS; her brother, Rev John Chrysoston Brost, OSB, Monastery of St. Gertrude, Cottonwood, ID; nephews; cousins, one of whom is Sister Andrea Johnston, SCL, MotherHouse, Leavenworth, KS; decesaed siblings include Sister Mary Veronica OSB.
A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2003, in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth, where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday, May 13 in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S, 4th St., Leavenworth KS 66048.
