Retired Army Col. John O. Batiste, 57, a decorated veteran of three wars and former secretary of the army War College, died Monday at a Fort Devens, Mass., hospital after a heart attack.

He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart while in command of a rifle platoon of the 87th Infantry Division in Germany in World War II.

Col. Batiste was a company commander and battalion operations officer with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea during the conflict there. He was awarded the Silver Star and a second Bronze Star.

He was given the Legion of Merit following a tour as an adviser with I Corps in Vietnam in the late 1960s.

A 1969 graduate of the Army War College, he served as the school's secretary and chief of staff from 1971 to 1974.

Col. Batiste's Washington tours included service with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the 1950s, in the Army Personnel Office in the 1960s, and as president of an Army Review Board from 1976 until his retirement from active duty in 1977.

He was an official with Bell Helicopter in Iran for about two years before returning to this country last February.

Col. Batiste was a native of Madison, Wis. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and the Command and General Staff College.
