John Kingma was born in March 1896 in Prinsburg, a city in the midsouthern part of Minnesota, son of Jenne Johannes "John" Kingma, who was born in the Netherlands, and Maggie Klienhausen, born in Illinois. Prinsburg was originally platted in 1886 by Martin Prins, a partner in the Dutch real estate firm Prins and Zwanenburg. It had in 2010 497 people.

In June 1900 Johny Kingma (4 years old, born in March 1896 in Minnesota), his father John Kingma (30, August 1870, Holland, immigrated in 1873, no occupation), mother Maggie (32, September 1868, Illinois, mother of one deceased and four living children), siblings Sara (12, December 1888, Minnesota), Mattie (7, November 1893, Illinois) and Albert (2, December 1898, Minnesota) were living at a rented home in Holland Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota.

On March 22, 1917 John Kingma married in Lake County, located in the extreme northwestern part of Indiana to Rose Schoon, whose parents were born in Holland too.

On June 5, 1917 the 21 years old bookkeeper John Kingma and his wife were living in the village of Lansing, nowadays a southern suburb of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, when he was administrated on a WW I Draft Registration Card. He was tall and slender, had grey eyes and darkbrown hair.

On July 31, 1918 son Douglas John Kingma was born, very probably in Lansing.

In January 1920 John Kingma (23, born in Illinois [not correct], bookkeeper at a produce farm), his wife Rose (23, Illinois), and their son Douglas John (1, Illinois) were living in their own house at Mattison Street in the village of Lansing, located just south of Chicago, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.

On June 7, 1925 son James Allen Kingma was born in Lansing, Cook County, Illinois.

In April 1930 John Kingma (34, Minnesota, bookkeeper), his wife Rose (34), their sons J Douglas (11) and James A (4, Illinois) were still living in Lansing, Waldwood Avenue, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.

On September 29, 1932 his son James Allen Kingma died in Lansing at the age of 7 years. On February 22, 1935 son Dale Howard Kingma was born in Lansing, Cook County, Illinois.

In April 1940 John Kingma (44, Minnesota, storage clerk at a chemical factory), his wife Rose (44, Illinois) and their sons John D (21, Illinois) and Dale H (5, Illinois) were living at their own home, worth #6500, in still Lansing, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois. They lived in 1935 in the same house.

In 1946 his wife Rose died in 1946 at the age of 50 years in Lansing, Cook County, Illinois. Widower John Kingma remarried widow Mary Flim and died in January 1975 at the age of 78 years in Florida.
