She was married to William Cecil Sutherland and they were the parents of six daughters, (twins) Bonnie Jean and Betty Joan, Dorothy Louise, Glenda Mae, Vivian Ann, and Karen Lynn. Gertrude was murdered at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Legion post in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.
