Clarence Ernest Schaffran, 78, of Castle Rock died Nov. 8, 2005. He was born in Castle Rock on Sept. 28, 1927, to Ernest R. and Ellen A. (Anderson) Schaffran. Mr. Schaffran attended Toutle schools and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a timber faller, grader operator and weight master for Weyerhaeuser Woods for 35 years. He married Janis Price in Seattle on May 22, 1948. She survives him. Also surviving are three sons, Ernest Schaffran, Robert Schaffran and Donald Schaffran; two brothers, Robert Schaffran and Russell Schaffran; two sisters, Vera Duchsherer and Gladys Gallow; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Silver Lake Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kelso-Longview Elks Lodge #1482. The viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Hubbard Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Toutle Fire Department, 5055 Spirit Lake Hwy., Toutle, WA 98649, or to the Tall Elks Memorial Program, 900 Ash St., Kelso, WA 98626.
