Sgt. Benson "Poppy" Austin, 94, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Graveside services will at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014, in Rosemound Cemetery with full Military Honors provided by the United States Air Force. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2014, at Connally Compton Funeral Directors.

Poppy was born in Waco, Texas, to the late Howard Walter and Rena Margaret "Maggie" Culverhouse Austin. He served two years in the U.S. Army Air Corp and fought in World War II. He later joined the United States Air Force as a Medic for over 22 years. He worked at Cox's for many years and retired from there in the 1980s.

He was preceded in death by four siblings.

Survivors include his son, Richard Austin and wife, Mary, of Houston; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; adopted daughter, Tonita Higgins, of Waco; nephew, Warren Terrell, of Waco; niece, Barbara Norred; other relatives and many friends.
