Jay Betts Dies
Friday, Aged 67

Jeweler in Chesterton
for Past 36 Years

J. L. Betts, a jeweler in Chesterton for the last 36 years, died at his home here Friday at the age of 67 years, 7 months, and 22 days after an extended illness.
Jay Lee Betts, the son of James and Selena (Baker) Betts, was born in Lebanon, Madison, County, New York, on April 18, 1876.
On August 6, 1902, he was united in marriage to Nellie Brown at Aurora, ILL. To this union were born five children, Walter, Marsene, Raymond, Ella Mae, and Betty Jayne. Walter and Ella Mae passed away in infancy,
Besides his wife and three children, survivors are two brothers, William of Hamilton, N.Y., and John of Orlando, Fla., one sister Mrs. George Buell of Earlville, N.Y., and five grandchildren.
Mr. Betts came to Chesterton in 1906 and in 1907 he became engaged in the jewelry business, being inspector for three railroads as well as taking care of the local trade. He was a member of the Northern Indiana Watchmakers Guild.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the First Methodist Church, Rev. Walter Wilson officiating. Burial was in McCool cemetery.

Betts on Sunday from out of town were: Thomas Brown of Perryville, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. John Betts, Chicago, Bessie Williamson, Mrs. Howard Bowman of Elkhart, Mr. and Mrs. William Uhler and son, Wallace Cameron, of Goshen, Emil Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O'Connor and son John, Mrs. Geraldine Shapley, Mrs. Dewey Shapley, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Russell, all of Gary; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kietzman, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Small, Mrs. Carrie Small, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Haxton, Daniel and Marsene Haxton, John Kuehl and son Louis, all of Hobart, Frank Kroetz, Harley Bowsher, Fred Moltz and Forrest Jones, Valparaiso jewelers, and Mr. and Mrs. V. Noble, also of Valparaiso; Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Hamilton of East Gary, and Miss Rose Thumser and Mrs. Alice Thumser of Zanesville, Ohio.
