HAMPTON - James Joseph McVey, 73, died Thursday, December 12, 2013. A native of Sophia, WV, he had been a Hampton resident since 1973. He served in the US Army, retiring in 1984 after 26 years of service and also worked as a mechanic for Sears for a number of years. He loved hunting, fishing and shopping, but loved his family more than anything. He always put others first and had a heart as big as he was. Survivors include his wife, Betty McVey; two daughters, Erin Rowe and her husband, Dustin and Cindy Snead and her husband, Keith; a sister, Rebecca Richardson; four grandchildren, Lacey McVey, Madison and Amanda Rowe, and Keith Snead; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Evan Copp. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 16, 2013 in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment with full Army honors will follow at 3pm at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. State Veterans' Cemetery, Suffolk. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675.
