Our beloved Dan Dasher Stubbs, 85, died on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He lived in constant devotion to serving his faith in God, his family, and his community. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on December 18, 1927, to Henry Clifton and Danella Stubbs, he was the second of six children. At 17 he joined the United States Navy, serving four years in the South Pacific. He then attended Georgia Tech on the G.I. Bill, graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering. Dan then worked for DuPont for over 30 years. In 1950, he married Winifred Hendry Smith of Claxton, Georgia. Their three children were nurtured with love, responsibility, and faith in God. His devotion to family, friends, work, and church defined him. In return he was supported and respected by them. Though he will be missed, he will always be remembered. In 1959, Dan and Winnie moved to Waynesboro, joining the community that would become a foundation for their life. He served on the development board for Augusta Medical Center and worked with the United Way. Dan continued to work for DuPont until his retirement. He then was hired as Plant Manager for WindCo of Lyndhurst. A devoted member of First Baptist Church for over 30 years, he served as a Deacon, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. His love of music was a joy and comfort all of his life. A life-long athlete, he was a semi-pro pitcher and a tennis player. Golf was his favorite sport and greatest outlet for his talent. His competitiveness drove him to excel in all his endeavors. Dan loved fishing with others, especially with his mother-in-law, Clistie B. Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Clifton and Francis; and sister, Janelle Durrence. He is survived by his wife of 63 years; children, Melinda S. Freeman, Sherri S. Bogard and husband, Scott, and Dan D. Stubbs Jr. and wife, Lynn; sisters, Mary Alice Branan and Lucy Forrest; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. We rejoice and give thanks to God for his life with us. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, September 12, 2013, at First Baptist Church by the Reverend David Washburn. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service, and other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Building Fund, First Baptist Church, Waynesboro, or Hospice of the Shenandoah. The family expresses its deepest gratitude to friends and family for their support during Dan's long illness. Special thanks go to Sheila Messick, his caregiver, and the Hospice of the Shenandoah, especially Mary Scott Miller, Gail Fravel, Joey Mooneyham, Mark Westebbe, and Dave Matheny for their helpful and kind assistance. McDow Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.mcdowfuneralhomeinc.com.
