He was born in Craven (now Georgetown) County SC. In 1751 his father moved the family to Gause Plantation in Brunswick County NC. A 1962 article by Eugene Fallon printed in The State Port Pilot notes that William is buried at Gause Tomb, along with his brothers Needham, Charles, Benjamin & John and their parents. Some researchers have noted his middle name as 'Bryant'. According to his will William divided his plantation between his sons William and Peter with the exception of the home and 50 acres to his wife, Elizabeth. He married twice:
1st - Mary Wingate abt. 1770 in Brunswick County NC
2nd - Elizabeth Bacot abt. 1776 in Brunswick County NC
